One dead and several injured. Floods, violent thunderstorms, in between tropical sweating heat. What an extreme thunderstorm weekend. And unfortunately it continues like this.
On Sunday there should be thunderstorms in a strip from Schleswig-Holstein to the Alps. Regionally, there should be strong thunder and lightning, and heavy rain is also expected.
In the afternoon, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), “enormous amounts” of around 50 liters per square meter could fall again within a short period of time.
“The weather situation remains tense today. The tropical summer continues. Between very warm air masses in the east and cooler air in the west, heavy thunderstorms and sometimes a great deal of humidity, ”said meteorologist Dominik Jung from the Q.met weather service to BILD on Sunday.
Graduate meteorologist Stefan Zender from WetterKontor says: “There are currently warnings of heavy rain in Thuringia and in the southern Harz (Saxony-Anhalt). The precipitation areas move very slowly, which means that high amounts of rain come together within a short period of time. “
And it stays hot: in the east there should be maximum temperatures of up to 28 degrees, in the rest of the country up to 24 degrees.
But when does something come down where? Weather expert Jung: “That cannot be said in terms of time. As soon as the sun falls in and it gets warm, it starts. Then somewhere in the area. Everything spontaneously. “
The previous storm record shows how devastating the thunderstorms have been so far. In several federal states, the fire brigade had to empty numerous cellars, entire streets and towns were flooded.
In Thuringia If it remains it remains very cloudy, showers and thunderstorms occur locally. The temperatures rise again to 27 degrees, in the mountains it stays a little cooler at a maximum of 24 degrees.
In Hesse there are some clouds and, especially in the eastern half, individual showers, in the afternoon individual thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. It gets a maximum of 19 to 23 degrees.
In Saxony-Anhalt it stays mostly dry and cloudy. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns again on Sunday morning of thunderstorms with heavy rain, for example for the Burgenland district and the Mansfeld-Südharz district. The temperatures rise again to 27 degrees, in the Harz it stays a little cooler at a maximum of 23 degrees.
After some severe thunderstorms, the weather calms down in North Rhine-Westphalia noticeably. On Sunday there are still a few rainfalls and thunderstorms in the east of the country, but mostly it remains cloudy and dry with up to 20 degrees.
In the next few days, according to the DWD, it will continue like this: Showers, thunderstorms and storms have to be expected again and again, on Monday especially in an area from Franconia via Swabia to the edge of the Alps.
The trend for the following days shows hardly any change either. One problem: the longer this weather period lasts, the less it is possible to spatially limit thunderstorm activity.
“The reason for this” dilemma “is the large-scale pressure distribution, which is currently very homogeneous and hardly changes,” explained Felix Dietzsch from the weather forecast center. “Accordingly, there is hardly any movement in the atmosphere, and the humid air mass can more or less boil away. Similar to the bubbles in a saucepan with water, it is left to chance where the thunderstorms then form. “
Climatologist Dr. Karsten Brandt from Donnerwetter.de says: “We won’t get rid of the thunderstorms this week. Especially next weekend there will be warm, humid air with thunderstorms. “
