Malikah Shabazz († 56) – Malcolm X daughter found dead in New York

New York – Malikah Shabazz, one of the six daughters of the murdered civil rights leader Malcolm X, is dead.

Shabazz was 56 years old. She was found Monday at her home in Brooklyn, New York, a police spokesman said. Her death was natural.

Malikah and her twin sister Malaak are the youngest daughters of Malcolm X. The girls never met their father: their mother, Betty Shabazz, was pregnant with them when Malcolm X was murdered on February 21, 1965 at the age of 39.

Just days before Shabazz’s death, there was another decisive event in the life of the civil rights activist’s family: two of the three men convicted of the murder of Malcolm X were acquitted.

A Manhattan judge overturned the convictions of Muhammad Aziz and the late Khalil Islam after prosecutors and the men’s attorneys said a re-investigation had found new evidence invalidating the case against them.

Mourning for Malikah Shabazz

Malikah Shabazz was – following the example of her father – also a civil rights activist and author. She leaves behind a daughter named Bettih.

Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., wrote on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened by the death of Malikah Shabazz. My condolences go to her family, the descendants of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X. “
