“Hannibal the Cannibal”: Serial killer Maudsley has to die in an underground glass box

“Hannibal the Cannibal” wants company, but the prison management remains tough – and the serial killer alone in his glass box …

Wakefield – Robert Maudsley, 68, is one of the UK’s most dangerous serial killers. Since 1983 he has lived in an underground prison cell made of bulletproof glass. He will die there too – all the applications the serial killer made for Christmas were denied.

For almost 40 years, Maudsley has lived 5.5 by 4.5 meters, and he receives his meals through a hole in the wall. He spends 23 hours alone in the glass box and has no contact with other inmates or guards. Not even if he is allowed to move outdoors for an hour a day.

The Liverpool murderer is incarcerated in Wakefield prison in Yorkshire, England. The jail is also called “Monster’s Palace” because the most dangerous criminals in the country are imprisoned there. The single glass cell was built especially for Maudsley in 1983.

The 68-year-old committed his first murder in 1974. Maudsley, who grew up in poverty and whose father was violent, was then a drug addict and sold his body. When one of his suitors showed him pictures of sexually abused children, Maudsley freaked out and killed the man.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder. More murders followed as a prisoner – and Maudsley became a serial killer nicknamed “Hannibal the Cannibal”.

In 1977, he and another inmate locked themselves in a cell with a convicted child molester, tortured and killed the man. He was then transferred to Wakefield Prison. There he murdered a man convicted of the murder of his wife in 1978 and, immediately afterwards, a convicted child molester. He simply told the prison guard that two fewer inmates would attend dinner. Since then, Maudsley has been kept away from the other prisoners and locked in the glass box.

The serial killer asked the authorities several times to change his situation. Once he asked if he could poison himself and die, reports British media.

This year, “Hannibal the Cannibal” submitted several applications before Christmas: He wanted to be allowed to mingle with the other prisoners, wanted a parrot and had access to television or music. All wishes were denied to the killer. He should stay in the glass box until his death.
