Athlete Vu Thanh An of the Vietnamese fencing team participating in the Tokyo Olympic qualifiers tested positive for Covid-19

In this tournament, the hopes of Vietnam fencing were not successful, in which the most regrettable was the main swordsman Nguyen Thanh An who did not reach the semi-finals of the sword slash content. At the Olympic Games 4 years ago took place in Brazil, Vietnamese fencing had 4 places to attend.

After finishing the competition, the athletes returned to Vietnam on May 7, medical isolation against Covid-19 in accordance with 21 days of regulations at a location in Ho Chi Minh City. After getting test results, athlete Vu Thanh An tested positive for the Covid-19 epidemic.

“We have received a notification about a Vietnamese fencing athlete testing positive for Covid-19. Currently, this athlete is being isolated according to regulations, being treated and in good health,” said Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh, Director of the High Performance Sports Department 1 (General Department of Sports and Sports).

Vinh added that Vu Thanh An is the only person who has not been vaccinated in the fencing team. The reason is because Vietnamese athletes were vaccinated with the first dose in April, but Vu Thanh An was in Ho Chi Minh City.

By May, with the next round of vaccinations, the team was close to the departure date. Due to the possibility of a fever after 3 days of vaccination, Thanh An did not receive the vaccine.
