VW, Porsche, Audi: ship burns with German cars on the Atlantic

The freighter with a capacity of 17,000 tons was on its way from Emden to Davisville (USA) when fire broke out in the cargo hold near the Azores on Wednesday. It spread so quickly that all 22 crew members had to abandon ship.

The crew was picked up by the Portuguese Navy and taken to a hotel. All remained unharmed.

At the time the fire broke out, the ship was 90 nautical miles, about 170 kilometers, southwest of the Azores, like the Portuguese Navy announced on Wednesday. The ship is stable southwest of the island of Faial.

The ship’s owners have arranged for it to be towed as it continues to burn. The “Felicity Alice” is registered in Panama and is operated by the Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL). According to CNN, she has not given any information so far.

Porsche confirmed to CNN that some of their vehicles are part of the load and that customers are being contacted by their dealers.

According to the report, Volkswagen also reacted. “We are aware of an incident involving a foreign cargo ship transporting Volkswagen Group vehicles across the Atlantic. The ship was on its way to North America,” said spokesman Dirk Ameer. “We are not aware of any injuries at this time. We are in contact with the shipping company to get more information about the incident.”

The Portuguese Navy said the fire has not yet been extinguished as of Thursday and a patrol boat remains on site to monitor the abandoned ship.

According to the car portal “The Driver”, the ship is still burning. There are 189 Bentleys on board. A Bentley spokesman confirmed this. Value of these cars: 30 million euros.

Several hundred Audi vehicles are said to be on the ship. According to the portal, there should be a total of 4,000 cars on board, including 1,100 Porsches.

According to “Marinetraffic”, the freighter left the port of Emden on February 10 and was scheduled to arrive in the port of Davisville in the state of Rhode Island/USA on February 23.
