VfB Lübeck: Coach Rolf Landerl is the record man

He’s back again!

And the first use after his Covid 19 illness will be a record game for Rolf Landerl (45). The third division duel on Saturday (2 p.m.) against 1. FC Magdeburg is his 141st as head coach of VfB Lübeck. This tops the all-time record set by Kurt “Jockel” Krause (1968–72 / † 1987).

“Being able to work for so long at a traditional club is not a matter of course these days. And already fills me with a little pride, ”admits the Viennese. He has been coaching VfB since 2016, plus two years as a regional league player (2009–11 / 60 appearances with nine goals). Landerl: “Lübeck is a liveable city. I knew that the family felt comfortable here. Then I know that I can work well too. ”

And – how does he work as a coach? “In my years as a professional I have seen many coaches and took something away from some of them, but most of all I saw how I wouldn’t want to do it. I try to keep a certain closeness to the team, to remain open, authentic and honest. It’s sometimes difficult because decisions can be hurtful, ”he says.

Most recently (at 0: 1 in Lautern and 1: 1 in Ingolstadt) Corona put him out of action. Landerl: “The first week was very uncomfortable. I wouldn’t have thought so. I had a cough, a headache and a fever, but most of all I was concerned with tiredness. In contrast to the flu, you don’t know how long it will change the body. “

Fortunately, everything survived. Now football and VfB Lübeck count again (without the injured Sebastian Hertner, Eli Ramaj and Tim Kircher). Landerl (“With Magdeburg I expect an opponent with a good mentality who is preparing for a fighting game”) can also polish up his personal FCM record. There is only one win in four games so far.
