A police officer was stabbed to death on Tuesday morning (local time) in front of the Pentagon near Washington, shortly afterwards he died of serious injuries.

The exact background to the incident was initially not known. However, the attacker is said to have been shot on site. Further details were expected at a Pentagon press conference.

The incident took place on a metro bus platform that is part of the Pentagon transit center, tweeted the Department of Defense Police.

The facility is steps away from the Pentagon Building, which is located in Arlington, Virginia.

An AP reporter heard several gunshots near the building, then a pause, and then at least one more shot. Another AP journalist heard the police shout “shooter”.

Because of the incident, the Ministry of Defense was temporarily cordoned off. After the attacker was shot, it was released again.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, 67, was in the White House at the time of the attack and met with President Joe Biden, 78.

In 2010, two Pentagon police officers were wounded when a gunman approached them in a security area.
