London – It has been around for a few years, but it has always worked flawlessly. Until now!
Due to a technical defect, the world-famous Tower Bridge in central London could not be closed on Monday afternoon.
“Tower Bridge is currently closed to traffic and pedestrians due to a technical error,” said the City of London Police on Twitter. The two wings of the bridge can be seen folded up on recordings on the British broadcaster ITV.
For an initially unexplained cause, it was reported that the wings could not be lowered as usual. The flow of traffic over the Thames was thus interrupted, and traffic quickly jammed on both sides of the bank.
The Tower Bridge usually opens around 800 times a year – i.e. around twice a day – for ships. They must apply for opening at least 24 hours in advance in writing.
