Tips to prolong the life of your refrigerator

The average refrigerator has a lifespan of 10 to 20 years, but if you apply the tips below, you can use your refrigerator longer than that.

Clean the inside of the cabinet regularly

Cleaning the inside of your refrigerator regularly not only prolongs the life of your appliance, but can also provide health benefits. According to Real Simple, you should thoroughly clean your refrigerator at least every few months or whenever you see food leaks.

To properly clean the refrigerator, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that you begin by removing any damaged items in it, and then completely empty the refrigerator by temporarily letting the products out. food products left on the kitchen counter or in the refrigerator. Finally, remove all removable parts, such as shelves and drawers… from the cabinet to clean them with dish soap, hot water…

Keep the outdoor unit clean of dust

Along with cleaning the inside of the refrigerator, the condenser coils of the refrigerator also need to be cleaned regularly. Johnny DIY recommends cleaning these coils at least once or twice per year for best results.

Change the water filter regularly (with a built-in filtered water cabinet)

If you use this type of cabinet, make sure you change the water filter at least every six months to ensure the unit is operating at peak capacity.

Keep the rubber gaskets clean

Another very important part of the refrigerator you cannot forget to regularly maintain is the gaskets and cushions of the cabinet. These are rubber gaskets that seal the doors of the appliance, keeping the cool air inside. However, this gasket layer is very easy to get dirty. Therefore, you should periodically replace them, even if they have been torn, damaged… over time.

Since these gaskets are difficult to clean, you should soak them in vinegar and hot water for a few dozen minutes, before rinsing, drying, and reinstalling them.

Keep the roof of the cabinet always ventilated

To help keep your refrigerator running at its best, Consumer Reports recommends that you don’t place or store anything directly on top of it. The top of the refrigerator has the effect of dissipating heat, helping to keep the food inside at an air-conditioned and cool temperature. While this can be the perfect space for snacks, cereal boxes, or a variety of kitchen items, it’s important to keep this area well-ventilated. Meanwhile, leaving items on the top of the device will prevent it from properly draining heat for proper operation.
