The man who founded the village of the hobbit


ItalyNicolas Gentile, 37, has turned his simple small-town life into an adventure and now he wants to share it with the world.

Pastry chef Nicolas Gentile is a fan of the British novelist John Ronald Reuel Tolkien with his work Hobbits and The Lord of the Rings.

A few years ago, he realized that reading books and watching movies were no longer enough to satisfy his passion. “I’m still reading about other people’s lives. One day I decided I wanted to live like a hobbit, but to the fullest,” he said.

There are no exact documents about the origin of the hobbits, only known that they were 0.6-1.2 meters tall. They often like to wear light-colored clothes, have reddish brown or blonde hair, live a simple life with a hobby of farming, good food and wine. Their house is very characteristic with its semi-submerged and round windows.

In 2018, Gentile invested all his savings to buy 2 hectares of land in the town of Bucchianico, Abruzzo region, central Italy. He built a house with a half-submerged underground area of ​​​​20 square meters. Since then, he, his wife and two children have lived here for the weekend. There are many hobbit costumes in the house, Gentile wears it all the time when he comes here. “My wife is the driving force behind everything. The children are now 8 and 11, always knowing one day they would move here,” he said.

The family also organizes many outdoor parties with friends. In an event that attracted several dozen like-minded people, by the end of the party many were crying and didn’t want to leave. “That’s when I thought why not build the whole village so everyone can live like me,” he said.

He gathered into a group that liked the hobbit lifestyle on social media, aiming to build a village to welcome its fans from all over the world. In order to resonate with the project and also celebrate the lifestyle, they organized a journey to transform into the characters from the movie “Lord of the Rings”, re-enacting a 289 km hiking trip to the city. Mount Vesuvius in Naples and throw the ring into the crater, like a scene from a classic movie.

Currently, Gentile is still raising more capital to build an entire village, expected to be completed in the summer of 2022. In the future, this place will have many trails, vegetable garden, cattle barn, a house. 350-400 m2 large house inspired by the character Bilbo Baggins’ house, plus four smaller houses.

Gentile said in the section The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the favorite character of the gray wizard Gandalf said: “It is not great deeds or great heroes that change the world, but small acts of kindness and love.” . This chef thinks that if we all treated each other well in simple ways, this little world would change in an instant.

“For me, this land is not about building hobbit houses, but about attracting passionate people, gathering to be able to accomplish something greater,” he said. speak.
