The couple lost everything in the flood: their neighbor bequeaths two houses to them

Carmen and Dirk Poppelreuter are spending the third Advent today at the “Zur Burgwiese” campsite in Mayschoss (Rhineland-Palatinate). The couple has lived there with their two dogs in a 30 square meter caravan – since they lost their 105 square meter apartment in the flood of the Ahr on the night of July 15.

But a loss is even worse: Brigitte Nietzard (65), the couple’s best friend and landlady at the same time, was killed in the flood. “She lived nearby. We heard their cries for help, ”says Carmen and cries. “But the water came too quickly. Nobody could save them. “

After her funeral, a will (AZ .: 5 IV 402/20) turned up at the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler District Court. In it the deceased pensioner, who had neither children nor siblings, appointed the Poppelreuters as heirs to two houses! The 180-square-meter single-family house in which she drowned and the 350-square-meter house in which the Poppelreuters were already tenants – both of which were badly damaged by the flood – she lived in.

“We would forego all the money in the world if Brigitte were still with us. We miss her so much, ”says Dirk. Selling the houses is by no means an option for the Poppelreuters. “We owe it to Brigitte to keep her building. We want to move into the little house ourselves later, ”says Dirk.

Real estate agent Manuel Efferz from Bad Neuenahr describes the value of the houses as follows: “Before the flood, the square meter of building land cost an average of 1,300 euros. The current development cannot be foreseen. “

“I’m at war with God. Why does he torment me, does he torment us like that? ”Complains Carmen. She and her husband no longer attend church services in the Catholic Ahr Valley. A few years ago, Carmen suffered a severe blow of fate. Rebecca († 24), her daughter from a previous relationship, chose suicide.

In the future, the couple will no longer rely on the church, but on human help. “We have such great people. Electricians, plumbers, drywall builders from all over the republic. All without asking for money, ”says Dirk.

Because the process mechanics for plastic parts and the early retirees hardly have any money for a renovation. An expert estimated 300,000 euros for the 180 square meter house alone.

After Christmas Eve, the couple will visit some of the artisans. Over time, they too have become friends. But no one can replace Brigitte.
