The 499 euro grill rusts: thanks to BILD, OBI pays money back!


Bremen – André Heinisch, managing director of a trading company from Weyhe (Lower Saxony), bought a grill station from the DIY chain Obi in May 2020 for 500 euros. It contains a gas grill, a charcoal grill and a smoker for smoking. To go with it, he buys a cover for 70 euros. And his own roof overhang, which he installs in the garden, for 250 euros.

And yet: when he removed the protective layer of the grill in the spring, all he saw was rust. Everything is rusty outside and inside, the paint has peeled off. Actually a guarantee case.

André Heinisch: “Obi refuses the guarantee because I should not have cleaned the grill properly. What does that have to do with the fact that this device is poorly painted? “

The hobby cook goes to the Obi market and asks what to do.

André Heinisch: “I should do everything in writing and send in photos. So I cleaned the grill from the winter muff and took photos. “

He sends the photos to the manufacturer of the grill, who offers a 10-year guarantee. André Heinisch: “I am really shocked. No guarantee, as the moisture from my cleaning can still be seen in the photo. That was interpreted as fat. I’m supposed to burn out the grill properly. But I don’t have a new paint job on the side. “

“In addition,” says the man from Lower Saxony, most of the rust is on the outside.

André Heinisch: “I need help from BILD here! I can’t buy a new grill every year. They want to fob me off with a voucher for 25 euros. That does not work like this!”

Obi reacts immediately: “We have consulted with the customer service and they will contact Mr. Heinisch so that he can get the amount reimbursed.”
