Nonnevitz / Dranske – While swimming in the Baltic Sea off the island of Rügen, a vacationer from Thuringia died on Sunday. As a police spokesman explained, the 54-year-old from Mühlhausen went into the water at the campsite near Nonnevitz / Bakenberg and was driven off.
The campsite is on the northern tip of the island of Rügen, where dangerous currents often form. On Sunday there was a gusty wind that temporarily reached force seven.
A woman saw the man’s plight and alerted helpers. Three men from the campsite swam out, but could not reach the 54-year-old and got into trouble themselves.
Firefighters with rubber dinghies rescued the three helpers and recovered the 54-year-old. An emergency doctor tried to revive the Thuringian, but it failed.
At the same time, another emergency was reported by two swimmers near Dranske in the north of Rügen. There helpers from the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) were diverted with a lifeboat, who wanted to help before Nonnevitz. The two swimmers could have saved themselves on land with the last of their strength, it was said.
