Storm: Car driver (23) killed by tree on Lake Constance


Berlin – Strong thunderstorms with hail, heavy rains, squalls: Heavy storms caused severe damage on Tuesday afternoon and evening in southern Germany. A young woman was killed on Lake Constance.

The driver (23) was on a country road between Bitzenhofen and Fuchstobel (Baden-Württemberg) at around 2:45 p.m. when a gust of wind knocked out a tree about 40 meters high.

The giant fell into the street and caught the young woman’s car at full speed and trapped her in the vehicle. Despite a quick and extensive rescue by the fire brigade and all the efforts of the emergency doctor, the 23-year-old died at the scene of the accident.

At the time of the terrible accident, a storm front was just moving across Lake Constance, causing damage to all of southern Germany.

Old town of Landshut under water – torrents and mud

Unusual masses of rain put the old town of Landshut under water on Tuesday evening. At the kick-off of the European Championship game Germany against England, heavy rain, lightning and thunder moved over the city, as a police spokesman said. There were torrents, muddy streets, cars washed away, flushed manhole covers, fallen trees, full cellars, damaged power boxes and oil tanks, as Mirko Olzem, the situation service of the integrated control center in Landshut, described the situation. According to initial findings, no one was injured. “That was a storm that only happens every five to ten years,” he added.

Large masses of water had fallen over the city within a very short time. According to the control center, the fire brigade and rescue service are on call for almost 650 missions between 5.30 p.m. and 8.45 p.m. That was well above average. About 20 more missions were made to the police.

Construction crane falls on residential building

In Meersburg (Lake Constance district) strong gusts of wind caused an approximately 25 meter high construction crane to tip over. The crane hit the roof of a three-story residential building and severely damaged one of the top-floor apartments. The crane boom hit the gardens of the property behind. At least three other residential buildings were damaged.

Fallen trees and full cellars during storms in southern Bavaria

There were strong thunderstorms with hail in the evening in southern Bavaria. They should move northeast on Wednesday night. A spokesman for the police in Rosenheim reported that trees had fallen on streets and cars, and the basements were full. “Calls come in here almost every minute,” he said. There was initially no precise overview of possible damage.

In Lindau on Lake Constance, the system of a garden show was damaged in a storm, as the organizers announced. Accordingly, branches of trees snapped off, construction fences collapsed and greenhouse doors were broken. However, the show should be able to open on Wednesday as planned.

Violent storms over Hessen

Storms with sometimes heavy rains put parts of Hesse under water on Tuesday afternoon. By early evening, the fire brigade in Darmstadt alone received around 70 emergency calls because water had run into cellars or basement apartments.

The fire brigade said that manhole covers had been pushed up in several places by the water pressure. In Frankfurt some cars got stuck in flooded underpasses.

Flooded streets in the Palatinate

Storms with heavy rain also in the northeast of the Palatinate: In Laumersheim near Grünstadt, among other places, numerous emergency calls were received because the cellar was full, the police said. In neighboring Obersülzen, the access roads should have been temporarily closed because the village was partially flooded and the water gushed out of the sewer system.

The start of training for the Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 was canceled on Tuesday after a few minutes. Because of a violent thunderstorm with lightning, thunder and heavy rain, coach Bo Svensson sent his team back to the dressing room early. The Dane welcomed 14 outfield players and two goalkeepers to the first training session in preparation for the coming season.
