Pola de Lena (Asturias) – A falling floodlight mast killed a spectator at a soccer game in Spain.

According to police reports on Sunday, a strong gust of wind probably knocked over an advertising tower, taking the lighting poles on the edge of the stadium with it.

According to the police, the 68-year-old spectator died on the spot. Another spectator was injured and taken to the hospital. According to local media, he broke his arm and suffered minor bruises.

The accident happened on Sunday afternoon during a fourth division match in Pola de Lena, in the Asturias region of northern Spain. A doctor who was on site during the game administered first aid to the injured. Emergency physicians then approached and tried to resuscitate the 68-year-old – but there was nothing more they could do for him. Guardia Civil officers were also at the scene.

According to eyewitnesses, the approximately 30 meter high mast was “completely bent”. According to the mayor of the municipality, Gema Álvarez, the two victims of the accident were local and were regulars at the stadium.
