Danger, dog bites! So: damn biting dog. Strictly speaking: 56 damn vicious dogs.
Anyone who visits the animal shelter of Vanessa Bokr (34) in Hörpel in the Lüneburg Heath needs courage. Because she only lives with dogs that are considered particularly dangerous, that attack their own masters, that muzzles can hardly stop, that attack sheep that they are supposed to be guarding.
Bokr founded the “Hellhound Foundation” for them, which is financed by donations. Hellhound – that means hellhound. And is meant lovingly. Above all, it is true.
100 liters of soup are simmering in the vat that Vanessa Bokr is stirring with a spade. 100 liters of meat, fish, vegetables, rice, potatoes – the daily ration for the dogs that nobody else wants. Some should already be euthanized.
Then came the angel of the hellhounds. Bokr is a cynologist, studied behavior, breeding and training of dogs. She says: “A vicious dog is not evil. He doesn’t get up in the morning and say to himself: Today I will hurt someone. Every dog that arrives here has a story. Nevertheless, the animals do not need pity, but clear, sovereign leadership.”
Staffordshires, German Shepherds, Bulldogs roam freely on the premises, all muzzled. Their stories are pretty gory.
Vanessa Bokr is never intimidated by her hellhounds, is not afraid – even if her job is dangerous. She was bitten four times, in the hands, legs, face, says: “For me, this is a mixture of prison and psychiatry.” And her dream job.
Bokr is happy when some problem cases pass the character test through their daily training and can be given to a new master again. Successful resocialization!
However, some of the hellhounds will never leave the shelter. For currently 12 animals, this is the end of the line. In humans it would be called preventive detention. Here it is called: a home.
Spike (15), pit bull, nicknamed “Rage Citizen”
Should be euthanized after seriously injuring both humans and dogs. Spike was picked up abandoned, showed behavioral problems. He bites when things don’t go his way and he feels dominant. If it wears a muzzle, it tries to bite through it or ram its victims with it. He had also developed food aggression and would attack anyone who approached his food.
Stitch (4), Old English Bulldog
Came to the hellhounds when he was nine months old because he attacked his owner, knocked her to the ground and bit parts of her face and arms. He may not be mediated, a character test was rejected by the office. He has a low threshold, attacks sticks. Which means: You can’t sweep the apartment without him freaking out. Stitch is unpredictable but has learned to control himself.
Lipton (8), bulldog
When he was less than a year old, he had already attacked and seriously injured seven people. At almost 70 kilos, he even climbs over 2 meter high fences and shows his teeth to anyone who wants to set a limit for him. Nevertheless, Lipton is a success story: After intensive work in the home, he passed the personality test and will soon be able to move to a new home.
Enzo (6), Old English Bulldog
With the hellhounds for three years, immediately: he bit his owner in the hospital because he wanted to defend her own bed against her. He was three years old then. The same thing happened at Hellhounds Station: he bit a zoo keeper while defending his bed against him. He also attacked Vanessa, but she prevailed against him. He accepts her as the pack leader.
