Over for Striezelmarkt ?: Dresden SPD wants to cancel Christmas markets

Dresden – The Dresden Social Democrats are calling on OB Dirk Hilbert (48, FDP) to cancel all Christmas markets this year. That would also mean the end of this year’s Striezelmarkt!

“In view of the high number of infections and great dynamism, this difficult measure is necessary in order to no longer leave traders in the dark and to protect the population and tourist travelers,” said the SPD city council group in a statement.

In addition, the Dresden Social Democrats are demanding an expansion of the mask requirement outdoors.

“In particular for heavily frequented district centers, public playgrounds as well as the movements in highly frequented parks and the Elbe Cycle Path, an expansion of the obligation to protect the mouth and nose should be examined,” so the demand. At the same time, however, the general mask requirement for the entire Neustadt should be checked.

The SPD demands also include a so-called “Corona steering group”, which is supposed to meet with the city council, a corona aid reserve of 5 million euros to support retail and gastronomy as well as an increase in the staffing of the health department.

Most recently, the city was cautious about the Striezelmarkt and announced a decision for this week.
