Cleaning rusty knives

Cut an onion and rub it over the rusted part. Rust is made up of hydrogen ions, while onions contain a chemical called sulphanilic acid that reacts with these hydrogen ions to break down rust and make your knives shiny again.

Clean metal surfaces and utensils

Mix onion juice and water in equal amounts. Dip a soft, clean cloth into this mixture and gently rub it over the metal surface. Leave for a while, then wash the utensils with warm water, you will see shiny metal utensils. You can also use the same process to clean the stovetop and grill.

Sore throat remedy

Onions are a great natural remedy for a sore throat. To treat a dry or sore throat, sip on some onion tea. You soak some onion skins and a few slices of onion in water (1 cup of water will need the peel from 1/2 onion). Boil, remove residue and drink, you will feel comfortable. Onion skins contain natural nutrients to fight colds, flu and coughs. Some people also steam onions with alum sugar, cook onions with porridge… to treat colds and sore throats.
