It should be the Federal President’s first personal medal handover this year: The founders of the vaccine manufacturer Biontech will be honored with the highest order of merit for their commitment in the fight against the corona pandemic.
The Biontech founders Özlem Türeci (53) and Ugur Sahin (55) received the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award is to be presented to the researcher couple on March 19 in Bellevue Palace by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (65), as the Federal President’s Office announced on Friday in Berlin. Chancellor Angela Merkel (66, CDU) will also take part in the ceremony.
The two scientists “combine basic medical research with its translation into practical use,” the statement says. With the development and approval of a vaccine against Covid-19, Türeci and Sahin have made a “decisive contribution to containing the corona pandemic”.
Biontech’s corona vaccine is also the first approved vaccine based on mRNA technology. Genetic information for the construction of a harmless pathogen component is administered by injection. The human immune system reacts to this and builds up protection against the virus.
The vaccine was approved for the EU on December 21st. He has been vaccinated in Germany since December 27th.
