Johnson & Johnson in the US: Workers mixed up ingredients

Two production lines – and one big problem!

In the United States, 15 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine have become unusable. Workers at a plant in Baltimore, Maryland, reported inadvertently mixed up the ingredients.

In addition to Johnson & Johnson, vaccines for AstraZeneca are also manufactured in the production facility of Emergent Biosolutions. First the “New York Times” reported on the breakdown.

Federal officials would attribute the error to “human error,” it said. The affected vaccine production facility is said to have not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the company is already preparing production in order to be able to meet delivery targets.

Johnson & Johnson only confirmed on Wednesday that there was a problem with a drug substance for its vaccine that did not meet quality standards at the Emergent Biosolutions production facility. The error was reported to the health authority FDA and more employees are now used to monitor production.

The company initially did not officially disclose how many vaccine doses were affected by the problem. The problem had no effect on the delivery of more than 20 million cans in the USA, which was promised by the end of March, it said.
