Ibiza: Ferry runs over rubber dinghy – man decapitated by propeller

Ibiza (Spain) – Horrible accident off the coast of Ibiza: A ferry runs over a rubber dinghy as it enters the port, beheads a 46-year-old with the ship’s propeller! The victim is said to be a Spaniard.

The accident occurred on Tuesday at 11.35 p.m., said the Spanish sea rescue service. The second occupant (46) of the dinghy, which was completely destroyed in the accident, was able to save himself at the last second by jumping into the water. A little later, he was rescued, slightly injured, and taken to hospital.

As the regional newspaper “Diario de Ibiza” reports, citing the Guardia Civil, divers from the police unit searched the water for the dead man’s head on Wednesday.

Although the cause of the accident is not initially clear, media cited spokesman for the authorities with the assumption that the approximately eight-meter-long rubber dinghy was probably overlooked by the ferry because it apparently did not have the position lights required at night.

The ferry operated by the Baleària company traveled between the islands of Formentera and Ibiza, which, like Mallorca and Menorca, belong to the Balearic Islands. Baleària regretted the accident and stressed that they were working with the authorities to determine the cause of the accident. The 132 passengers and ten crew members of the ferry were uninjured.
