Hundreds of German vacationers stranded on Madeira – strong wind is to blame

Madeira, the flower island off the coast of Africa. A holiday dream – as long as you get away again. But since the weekend, hundreds of tourists have been stranded on the island.

“We wanted to fly back to Germany on Sunday,” reports BILD reader reporter Julia Kastner (28). The Munich native and her boyfriend came to Madeira for a week on February 13 – and are still there now. The reason: numerous flights were canceled due to the storm. So also the Lufthansa flight to Munich.

Curious: Airlines such as TAP Portugal, TUIfly, British Airways or Easyjet take off and land on the island.

Particularly annoying: There are no explanations from Lufthansa. Julia was on the hotline for three quarters of an hour without finding out anything. “I even wrote to Lufthansa via LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram,” she says. “But Lufthansa is unreachable and does not even provide information about overnight accommodations.”

Another attempt to fly on Monday. But the flight is canceled again. The student is surprised: “Other airlines have flown out their travelers – just not Lufthansa.” And asks herself: “Why are those affected here so let down?” Why aren’t they actively looking for ways to get us off the island – by ship if necessary?”

Same picture on Tuesday. “We don’t have fresh laundry anymore, at the airport you see familiar faces of fellow sufferers.” Only Lufthansa is nothing to see. Julia: “At the airport, we were approached by the ground staff and asked if we were from Lufthansa and could help.”

When asked by BILD, Lufthansa confirmed the flight cancellation. “Both Lufthansa flight LH1790 Munich-Funchal on Sunday and the replacement flight on Monday could not land in Funchal due to unfavorable wind and weather conditions.” But why don’t other airlines, such as Easyjet or the Portuguese TAP, take off with Lufthansa? Answer: “The safety of our passengers and employees always has the highest priority.”

How to proceed – unclear. Lufthansa: “That depends on the (dynamic) weather conditions on site. Safety is the top priority here.”

In any case, it wasn’t that far on Wednesday: the Lufthansa flight to Munich was canceled again. Last hope: a flight with Eurowings to Hamburg.
