Hormones: testosterone deficiency must be corrected

Testosterone is not only the engine of male sexuality, it is essential for the proper functioning of the body. A decrease in its production must be rectified to avoid accelerated aging of the body.

Inevitable, but progressive: in men, the decrease in the rate of the hormone testosterone is about 1% per year from the age of 30. However, we do not speak of andropause, since it is not comparable to menopause, indicates Dr. Faix, urologist, andrologist and sexologist of the French Association of Urology (AFU). “No woman escapes menopause, while the drop in hormone production is more variable in men. It is rare that there is a total collapse. »

In this matter, two criteria come into play. The first factor is age. The second, the presence of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, tumors, HIV infection or hepatitis, kidney or heart failure. Certain treatments also have a role, such as corticosteroids and opioids. “The older we get, the more illnesses we have, the more we can be affected by the drop in testosterone. » Variable, the symptoms are not very specific and complicate the diagnosis. “There are sexual symptoms such as a decrease in libido, erections and the quality of sexual intercourse”and other more general ones: hot flushes, lack of tone, fatigue, sleep disturbances, mood swings with depression.

It is important to treat yourself. “Doctors should offer more testosterone dosage, especially among 40-50 year olds, especially those with a chronic disease. » Produced by the testicles and the adrenal glands, this hormone is not only for sexual purposes. “It is also linked to cardiovascular metabolism, cognitive functions, increased muscle mass, bone development, and the body’s general metabolism. » A deficiency increases the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems. “A drop in hormones leads to accelerated aging of the body. Not to mention the psychological level, in everyday life,” explains Dr. Faix. “I have a patient who was very tired with a lack of tone. Sexuality did not interest him since he was a widower. He just couldn’t garden anymore and it bothered him.”, he says. An examination confirms the deficit. By correcting it, “He got back in shape to be in his garden”.

How to detect testosterone deficiency?

A simple blood test with testosterone assay allows screening. Then we try to identify the cause. If it is not treatable, long-term replacement therapy is offered to replace natural testosterone. “There are two in France: gel treatments and intramuscular injections. The tablets are no longer available. » The initial prescription is reserved for urologists and endocrinologists. The GP can renew the prescription. “The choice of treatment depends on the patient and the depth of the deficit. The gel is applied every day, but you should not have contact with your partner for 15 minutes while drying, wait at least 2 hours before washing. Injections are given once every 3 weeks, but with varying waves of effectiveness. » The patient is monitored every 3 to 6 months until his general condition improves.

A strange practice, the tanning of the testicles

In April 2022, Tucker Carlson, an American host, during a TV show, claimed that this therapy made it possible to produce more testosterone. A “solution” immediately denounced by doctors. Attention danger ! You will only get withered testicles with age spots, warns Dr. Faix.
