Burghausen is in Bavaria – not in the Wild West. Nevertheless, on Friday morning a wild herd of cows thundered towards the city center. The 16 cattle could only be pushed back in front of the local police station.
But then the frightened animals scattered in a forest. They were surrounded, the area cordoned off over a large area.
“Veterinarians are out here with anesthetic rifles. They are accompanied by hunters and the police, ”warned Markus Szehr, the deputy chairman of the volunteer fire brigade, to the residents.
Initially, the police used a drone to locate the stressed animals – with moderate success. After several hours, only four cattle were stunned and removed. The rest of the herd became increasingly restless and aggressive.
In the afternoon, a cattle stormed out of its hiding place and attacked the fire brigade’s command vehicle.
After one of the 148 helpers was injured while trying to catch another animal, the Altötting District Office gave its consent to the shooting of unruly animals.
The mission ended in the late afternoon. Bloody balance: eight dead and seven captured animals. Only one cattle was still on the loose in the evening. The manhunt is ongoing.
