Five federal states: 10 arrests in a large-scale raid against smugglers


Darmstadt – During a raid against smugglers on Thursday there were several arrests and searches!

Under the direction of the Darmstadt public prosecutor’s office and the Federal Police Department for Combating Crime (Frankfurt), investigators hit 15 locations in the Seeheim-Jugenheim, Weiterstadt, Roßdorf, Darmstadt, Heppenheim, Idstein (Hesse), Langenfeld (North Rhine-Westphalia), Mannheim (Baden-Württemberg), and Großbeeren area (Brandenburg) and Glinde (Schleswig-Holstein) too. They searched residential and commercial premises and four tax advisory offices.

The occasion was an “investigation into suspected smuggling of foreigners on a commercial basis, tax evasion and withholding and misappropriating wages”.

The officers arrested a suspect. The German (36) and a 32-year-old from the Seeheim-Jugenheim area are said to have smuggled in at least 13 Ukrainians “by abusing the visa-free entry option” in order to employ them as drivers in their courier service.

Background: Ukrainian citizens are allowed to enter the country for tourist purposes without a visa – 90 days within a reference period of 180 days. Anyone who wants to work needs a residence permit and a work permit.
