Find in Norway: Meteorite was in the kitchen cupboard for six years

Oslo – So small and yet a big sensation! In autumn 2016, Stine Harklau (40) was walking through the landscape of Jordalen near Voss (Norway) and stumbled over a small black stone. She took him with her.

What she had no idea at the time: she had a sensation in her hands, a meteorite. It is only the 17th find ever in Norway.

But for Stine it was just a small rock. And she put the find in the kitchen.

But she was surprised that the stone was so small and yet so heavy. But only now did she bring the find to the geologist Johannes Vik Seljeboth.

“But he opened his eyes when he saw the stone,” reports the finder on Norwegian TV broadcaster NRK.

The meteorite has since been studied by the Norwegian Meteorite Network. It weighs 62 grams and is only the size of two fingernails.

“The stone is about 4 billion years old and comes from our solar system, from the area that lies between Mars and Jupiter,” states the scientist Morten Bilet.

He is almost certain that the stone fell from the sky during the cold season, otherwise it would have penetrated the earth. So the fall was softened by the snow.

He stayed on the mossy ground instead of sinking. As the snow melted, the “heavenly stone” appeared.

The finder gave the meteorite to the Natural History Museum in Oslo. It will be on display there from May 2022.
