Cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana …
Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, who has dual citizenship of the US and Mexico, was arrested at Dulles International Airport near Washington DC. She should appear in front of a federal court in Washington on Tuesday – via video switch.
“El Chapo’s” wife is also accused of helping her husband escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She was also “busy planning another prison break” before Guzmán was extradited to the US in January 2017, according to the Justice Department.
Emma Coronel Aispuro was born near San Francisco in 1989, grew up in the United States and competed in beauty contests when she was young. There she is said to have met “El Chapo”. She has been with Guzmán since 2007. In 2012, Aispuro gave birth to twin girls.
El Chapo, leader of the powerful Sinaloa cartel in Mexico for 25 years, was responsible for smuggling mountains of cocaine and other drugs into the United States. He is sitting in a maximum security prison in the US state of Colorado. A court in New York had sentenced him to life imprisonment plus 30 years in July 2019.
His wife was among the spectators in the courtroom at the time. She kept throwing him kisses.
A jury found Guzmán guilty of all ten charges in one of the largest drug trials in American history – including involvement in a criminal organization, manufacture and international distribution of cocaine and heroin, and money laundering and firearms use.
