Alexander Zverev (24) has a bye in the first round of the BMW Open in Munich.
Time to talk …
Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann (47) will talk to Zverev and his brother and manager Mischa (33) during the tournament (April 26 to May 2). Topic: The comeback of the best German tennis player in the DTB Davis Cup team.
Kohlmann to BILD: “We want to know whether we have a chance and what his tournament calendar looks like.”
DTB Vice President Dirk Hordorff (64) is therefore expected in Munich.
Zverev last competed in February 2019 in the successful qualification against Hungary for Germany in the Davis Cup.
But then he canceled the final round in Madrid because he rejected the traditional competition format, which had been new since then. Without him, the DTB team reached the quarter-finals, knocked out against Great Britain.
At the beginning of this year there was a first approximation.
Before the Australian Open, Zverev played for Germany at the ATP Cup in Melbourne / Australia. Together with Jan-Lennard Struff and Kevin Krawietz it was not over until the semi-finals against Russia. And: Mischa Zverev, as team boss, represented Kohlmann, who had stayed at home because of the corona restrictions. “There was and is a close exchange,” says Kohlmann. And: “I am in good spirits that we have a chance.”
The next Davis Cup round will be played against Austria (with Zverev-Spezl Dominic Thiem) and Serbia (with Novak Djokovic) at the end of November. Both games will be played in Innsbruck.
Teammate Struff, with whom Zverev formed a strong double in Australia, is also campaigning for his Davis Cup comeback. To BILD he said: “I will definitely speak to him again. We’re always better when he plays. “
