Corona pandemic – virologist advises avoiding celebrations and family visits

The Düsseldorf virologist Jörg Timm has called for private parties and family visits to be largely avoided over the Christmas period. “With the current number of infections, a drastic increase in Covid-19 cases can be expected in the new year, which will pose enormous problems for us,” said the head of the Institute for Virology at the Düsseldorf University Hospital of the “Rheinische Post”.

Timm described the resolutions of the federal and state governments to tighten the corona protective measures as necessary. “The stress in the intensive care units has increased continuously in the last few weeks, so that further measures were urgently required,” said the scientist.

The heads of government of the federal and state governments decided on a “hard lockdown” on Sunday, which should last from Wednesday until at least January 10th. All shops except shops for daily needs must therefore close. The contact reduction to a maximum of five people from two households remains, even on New Year’s Eve. Four close relatives are only allowed to join the group on Christmas days from December 24th to 26th.
