Numerous refugees were killed in a boat accident off the Tunisian coast.

According to the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, five survivors were rescued.

The Italian coast guard recovered 20 bodies from the accident site near the port city of Sfax, reported the Italian website Tgcom24.

In 2020, more people tried to get from Africa to Europe again. On the one hand, the corona epidemic has further worsened the economic situation in North Africa; on the other hand, migrants and refugees are frequently mistreated and imprisoned in Libya.

According to the Interior Ministry, Italy has seen a 400 percent increase in the number of arrivals of refugees on boats crossing the Mediterranean from Tunisia since the beginning of the year.

The Spanish “Open Arms” is currently the only private rescue ship in the Mediterranean. It started on Wednesday.
