The doping scandal came to Sun Yang in September 2018, when he refused to cooperate with the doping testing team. This led to him being banned by the International Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) for 8 years for reasons related to banned substances.

Despite winning, CAS only reduced the penalty and Sun Yang could only return in May 2024. This means that the 29-year-old super swimmer will not be able to attend the 2021 Olympics, where he is the defending champion in the 200m freestyle swimming event.
