After Amazon or Waymo, Stellantis is adding a new major partner in its strategy to transform itself into a mobility “tech-company”. The manufacturer resulting from the merger between PSA and Fiat Chrysler announced on Thursday a partnership with the American semiconductor designer Qualcomm to equip the vehicles of its 14 brands (Peugeot, Citroën, Jeep, etc.), from 2024. The agreement covers several million cars each year, although no precise figures have been provided.
Long specializing in chips for smartphones, Qualcomm has recently sought to diversify into the automotive market, where demand for semiconductors has exploded in recent years. The company has developed a “digital chassis” under its Snapdragon brand, which can provide both vehicle connectivity and support driver assistance software. More than twenty brands are already customers of one or more features of this “chassis”.
