Angel Boom: What You Need To Know Now!

Fresh air, pure nature, a lot of distance – and with a bit of luck catching a delicious dinner: In Corona times, fishing is one of the trend hobbies in Germany. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania alone, the state anglers’ association has registered 6,800 new members since the beginning of the pandemic, and 7,000 in Brandenburg. The number of fishing license examinations is increasing everywhere – and recently women are increasingly drawn to the banks. Here you can read what is important now.

Fishing without a license

If you want to get to know the hobby without an exam, you can now do so in many federal states. These include Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Schleswig-Holstein, Brandenburg, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia. So-called holiday fishing permits are issued for a fee via the town halls and online. They are only valid for a limited period of time. Above all, anglers are only allowed to catch non-conformist fish – pike or pikeperch are taboo.

Fishing license & fishing permit

More bodies of water and almost all types of fish are allowed: if you want to fish regularly, you need this document! The fishing license is obtained by completing a preparatory course and then taking the sport fishing exam. For example fish species, equipment, laws, hydrology and nature conservation are queried. Cost: around 150 to 200 euros.

With the proof of examination you go to the responsible fisheries office and have a fishing license issued.

Now it is clear THAT you can fish – WHERE depends on who manages the waters. Whoever joins an angling club of the regional associations can choose their bank. Season tickets must be purchased for other waters.

The types of fishing

Many newbies start with that Float fishing. A piece of string (tendon) with a hook hangs from a float (pose) – there are worms, maggots, dough or corn on it. If a fish bites, the float sinks – the angler can pull harder for a moment and then haul in the catch. White fish such as bream or roach are caught.

Also at Bottom fishing wait patiently until the bite. The bait (for example, worms) is pulled to the ground with a weight. Eels, barbels and pikeperch bite here.

At the Predator fishing on the other hand you are constantly on the move. The pike, pikeperch or perch are simulated a prey fish with artificial bait. These lures are made of metal, rubber or plastic.

There are numerous other types of fishing. At the Fly fishing the fishing line forms the casting weight. There are artificial baits in the form of insects on it. Brown trout, for example, are caught in this way. At Sea fishing With so-called paternoster systems, anglers can catch several herrings or mackerel at once.

Starter sets are very cheap. At discounters and online, combinations of rod and reel are offered together with a small accessory box for as little as 30 euros. Sometimes, however, the quality suffers from the competitive prices. In addition, there should be tools in the fishing case that are legally required: hook removers and fish stunners, a landing net and a knife. It always makes sense to seek advice from specialist retailers. “For beginners I recommend a three-meter-long rod for around 35 euros, plus a reel with a stern brake for 30 euros,” says fishing dealer Harald Rebischke from Heiligenhafen (Schleswig-Holstein). You should budget another 40 euros for the accessories. The dealers always give free tips about the local waters and what they have to offer depending on the season.

Environmental and species protection

Anglers and their associations in Germany see themselves as part of nature conservation. So the protection of the bank areas or the fauna of the waters are already part of the lessons for the fishing test. Studies even show that the management of water bodies by anglers does not have to bring any disadvantages for nature.

Protection rules apply to some fish species in Germany. Many predatory fish in freshwater have closed seasons in spring when they are not allowed to be fished. For others such as cod in the Baltic Sea, minimum dimensions apply when caught.
