Accident drama in Switzerland: snowcat kills grandma (73), granddaughter (2) survives

A 73-year-old Swiss woman from the canton of Lucerne was killed in an accident with a snow groomer in a Swiss ski resort on Christmas Eve. The driver (22) overlooked the woman and her two-year-old granddaughter when reversing the vehicle and carried them away, as reported by the police of the canton of Valais.

The woman died at the scene of the accident, the girl was critically injured and flown to a clinic in Bern in a helicopter. The accident happened in the late afternoon around 4:50 p.m. in the Fiescheralpe-Kühboden ski area in Upper Valais.

The woman had been a pedestrian.

“We are deeply affected by the accident and express our condolences to the relatives with whom we are in close contact,” said Valentin König, managing director of the ski lift company, to the Swiss news portal “20 Minuten”.

The 22-year-old driver of the snow groomer is one of his employees. This will now be looked after psychologically. They are also in close contact with the police and the public prosecutor’s office to clarify how the accident came about.
