40 years ago Ernst-Günter Porsch drove a Benz – now he has found it again

This love goes through the carriage! Pensioner Ernst-Günter Porsch (69) from Elsfleth in the Oldenburger Land has a weakness for discarded cars, which he brings back to life as a hobbyist.

Every morning the trained roofer searches the Internet for old treasures. Some time ago he made a very special discovery: “I found my old Mercedes 220 S, built in 1960, 120 hp!” Porsch owned this car once – and sold it 40 years ago.

The reunion after four decades took place at a car dealer in Oldenburg (Lower Saxony). The color was different than before – instead of silver, it was now a peculiar silver-green – but Porsch ignored it: “The wooden moldings, the door panels that I had used myself at the time were still there! Even the body was like it used to be, completely untampered. I was so touched, tears welled up in my eyes. “

The pensioner and the dealer looked in the vehicle registration document – there was actually Porsch’s name on it as one of the previous owners.

Porsch continues: “The dealer had goosebumps and sold me the car with the words, ‘It’s yours’.” Porsch paid 8,000 euros, actually the dealer wanted more for it.

Now the Benz is jacked up in Porsch’s garage, and he works on it every day. “The car has to be completely overhauled, like it used to be.” The pensioner reminisces:

“In 1972, when I was just 20 years old, I bought the car after doing military service. As an accident car for 1500 marks. The car was blue then. I repaired it in an old barn, had to take it all apart. Then I painted it silver. “

With his great love Evelyn he went on the first big tour to the south of France. “We camped there and whatever else you do in the car when you’re young,” says Porsch with a smile. When Evelyn separated from Porsch a few months later, he hardly drove the car anymore.

He later sold the vehicle. “To whom and for how much, I don’t remember.” But he has never forgotten the Mercedes itself. In a year, Porsch wants to drive the Mercedes through the north. “I’ll feel like I’m 20.”
